Saucy Lemon The problem is I don't have the same BIOS, besides my Boot drive where Vista is on is on a IDE drive, so it needs to boot first. Turn off your external drive (assuming it has an exteranl power source). Now leave it off. Reboot your laptop. Wait till Windows comes up and it settles down.

I already have the laptop operational, having installed programs (using the trial method) that seem to work well in Vista. I don't think I should chance screwing up Vista, at least not until In time of need, when the computer crashes and won't boot beyond Safe Mode, CMS doesn't work too well with an external drive.

My data is backed up on One Care on an external Hard Drive, I have had some difficulties with that too, but I can replace anything missing in time. Was Vista pre-installed on it? Which version of Vista? HOW did you reinstall Vista? Step by step? Did you boot from the Vista DVD-ROM and run Setup from there?

Is it possible to restore a disk image to a virtual drive? What I'd like to do is create a virtual XP Pro machine on my new Vista laptop and have the image of my old it has no problem seeing either the secondary virutal drive or the external USB drive. It just can't see them when I boot up off the Acronis CD.

Moving "Documents" to encrypted drive (worked in XP)
I was running Vista 64-bit home premimum and needed to create a dual boot vista ultimate 64 /32 machine on my laptop. So, while running vista home premium 64 on my laptop, I opened the Easy Transfer program and followed the instructions verbatim. All of my data (about 14GB) was saved to a USB External Hard drive.

You can get an EIDE WD Caviar 7200 rpm 320 GB hard drive (white box ) for less than $90. Stick that in an external drive enclosure (on the order of $20) and This will over write the Vista boot files so they will need to be restored. VistaBootPro works for this. There are adapters that will allow you to attach your laptop's drive to a standard IDE controller. I have used these in the past, and they are a real lifesaver. So I would not be able to use the hidden partition as the boot disk for vista to repair any damaged files? It's just that I would obviously want to try
